Hyundai Plant - World's Most Advanced Plant 03/19/2010
![]() © Hyundai Motor Company USA As a part of my course work, I have been to visit Hyundai Auto Manufacturing plant in Montgomery Alabama. It was a huge car manufacturing plant which manufactures two models, the Sonata and Santa Fe. Chung Mong-Koo, Chairman of Hyundai invested $1.4 billion for this plant. It had its land break on 12th April 2002 and opened in May 2005. It is widely spread on 1744 acres of land with stamping facility, welding, painting, engine shop and a two mile race track for testing. Nearly 2700 people are employed to produce 1200 cars per day. Hyundai means modern in Korean. Hyundai contributed to numerous donations to organizations from 2006. The 45 minute tour starts from the stamping shop where the base individual parts are made like doors, roof and body. They are moved to a welding shop by a conveyer belt. Everything is automated here with robots. Robot takes 45 seconds for each car to weld its parts. After welding, the car moves to the painting shop. Hyundai uses eco friendly elements in the paints and apply it with robots. It is resistant to all daily used chemicals and with stand with all types of climate conditions. Finally, the engine, dashboard, seats and all accessories are fixed and go to testing in the 2, mile race court. Quality is checked in every step from starting. Now the vehicle is ready to serve the customers. 65% of the parts are brought from Seoul and assembled here. Hyundai uses the just in time manufacturing process. It says that the success lies within the happiness of the employees. It is the world’s most advanced automotive plant. I enjoyed this tour. You too can plan for the tour by visiting its website.
